How to Apply DTF Transfers to Blankets and Fleece Throws

Custom Blankets: A Growing DTF Product Category

Personalized blankets and fleece throws have become one of the most popular gift and home decor items on the market, and DTF transfers make it easy to add full-color, photo-quality designs to them. Whether you're printing a cozy fleece throw for a holiday gift or a sherpa blanket for a family photo keepsake, DTF transfers give you the flexibility to print any design without the color limitations of embroidery or the setup costs of sublimation.

Choosing the Right Blanket Material

Not all blanket fabrics press the same way. Fleece and micro-fleece are the easiest materials to work with because they're heat-tolerant and have a smooth surface for the transfer to bond to. Sherpa and minky blankets have a plush, uneven texture, so they require firm, even pressure and sometimes a lower platen to compensate for the thickness. Woven cotton or cotton-blend throws behave similarly to a t-shirt and are very DTF-friendly. Avoid pressing directly onto blankets with a high polyester pile without a test press first, since some synthetic fibers can scorch or flatten under high heat.

Prepping and Pressing Blankets

Start by pre-pressing the blanket for 5-10 seconds to remove moisture and flatten the fibers where your design will sit. Because blankets are thicker and bulkier than a shirt, use a pressing pillow or block underneath the fabric so you're only compressing the area under the design rather than the entire folded blanket. Press at 300-320°F for 15-20 seconds with firm, even pressure, allow the transfer to cool according to the film type, then peel. A second light press with a Teflon or parchment sheet on top for 5-10 seconds helps seal the edges on textured fabrics like sherpa.

Design Tips for Blankets

Because blankets are viewed from a distance and often draped or folded, bold designs with good contrast tend to read better than fine, detailed line work. Large center-of-blanket designs, corner monograms, and photo-collage layouts are all popular choices. If you're offering photo-blanket printing, use gang sheets to combine multiple sizes and test prints so you can maximize each sheet before committing to a full run.

Growing Your Product Line

Adding blankets to your custom apparel shop is a simple way to reach a new customer base, especially around the holidays, baby showers, and memorial or keepsake gifts. Since DTF transfers ship ready to press, you can add blankets to your lineup without buying any new equipment, and DTF Transfer Nation's fast turnaround means you can test the category with a small order before scaling up.
