How to Apply DTF Transfers to Bags, Backpacks, and Duffels

Why Bags Are a Great DTF Product

Backpacks, duffel bags, and canvas totes are everywhere — at school, the gym, and on weekend trips — which makes them an easy add-on product for any custom apparel business. DTF transfers work well on most bag fabrics, giving you the same full-color, photo-quality printing you'd use on a t-shirt, but on a completely different product category.

Know Your Bag Fabric

Bags are made from a wider range of materials than apparel, so it's important to check what you're working with before you press. Canvas and cotton twill bags press almost exactly like a t-shirt and are the easiest to start with. Nylon and polyester backpacks or duffels are more heat-sensitive and can melt, shine, or warp at standard shirt temperatures, so they typically need a lower heat setting and a test press. Bags with rubberized bottoms, zippers, or plastic hardware near the design area need extra care to avoid melting trim.

Pressing Techniques for Bags

Because bags are three-dimensional and often stuffed with padding or pockets, insert a flat pressing pillow, cardboard, or heat-resistant platen inside the bag behind the print area to create a firm, even surface. Pre-press for 3-5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles, then press your transfer at 300-320°F for canvas bags, or drop to 270-290°F with a slightly longer press time for synthetic backpacks. Always test a scrap piece of the exact bag material first, since backpack fabrics vary widely between brands.

Best Placement and Design Choices

The front pocket, top flap, and side panels are the most popular placement spots for bag designs. Keep in mind that seams, zippers, and curved pockets can make it harder to get even pressure, so simple shapes or smaller logos often work better than edge-to-edge designs on structured bags. For duffel bags, a bold design centered on the main body panel tends to be the most visible and easiest to press evenly.

Expanding Your Product Offerings

Custom bags are popular for team gear, school spirit wear, corporate giveaways, and travel accessories, giving you an easy upsell alongside your apparel line. Because DTF transfers arrive ready to press, you can add bags to your catalog without new equipment — just make sure to test each new bag style before taking on a bulk order.
