How to Apply DTF Transfers to Hoodies and Sweatshirts

Why Hoodies and Sweatshirts Require Special Attention

Hoodies and sweatshirts are among the most popular garments in custom apparel. From team spirit wear to branded merchandise and personalized gifts, these cozy staples are in constant demand. But if you've ever tried pressing a DTF transfer onto a hoodie and ended up with a blurry print, incomplete adhesion, or a design that peeled after the first wash, you already know that hoodies come with their own set of challenges.

The good news is that once you understand what makes fleece and sweatshirt fabrics different from a standard t-shirt, you can dial in your settings and consistently produce professional results. This guide walks you through everything you need to know — from equipment setup to post-press finishing — so your hoodie prints look great and last for years.

What Makes Hoodies Different from T-Shirts

Hoodies and sweatshirts are typically made from cotton-polyester fleece, French terry, or heavyweight cotton blends. These fabrics differ from standard t-shirts in three important ways.

Thickness: Fleece is significantly thicker than a jersey knit t-shirt. This extra bulk can affect how evenly heat and pressure transfer through the fabric to the garment surface.

Texture: The raised, looped interior of fleece creates an uneven surface on the exterior. If the nap isn't pressed flat before applying your transfer, you risk an uneven bond and a textured appearance in the final print.

Moisture retention: Fleece traps moisture more readily than thinner fabrics. Pressing a hoodie without pre-pressing it first can cause steam to interfere with adhesion and result in a blotchy or incomplete transfer.

None of these factors make hoodies difficult to work with — they simply require a slightly adjusted process.

Equipment You'll Need

Before you begin, make sure you have the following: a quality heat press with consistent temperature and pressure (swing-away or pneumatic presses work especially well for bulky garments), a Teflon sheet or parchment paper, a heat-resistant pillow or foam pad to insert inside the hoodie, and your DTF transfer from DTF Transfer Nation.

A heat-resistant pillow or platen insert is particularly important for hoodies. Inserting it inside the garment creates a firm, flat pressing surface and prevents the back layer of the hoodie from bonding to the front during pressing.

Step 1: Pre-Press the Hoodie

This step is non-negotiable. Place the hoodie on your heat press (with the pillow insert inside) and press for 3–5 seconds at your normal pressing temperature. This removes any moisture trapped in the fleece, flattens the nap for better transfer adhesion, and pre-heats the garment so your actual press achieves a more even bond.

After pre-pressing, allow the garment to cool for just a few seconds before positioning your transfer.

Step 2: Position Your DTF Transfer

Center your transfer on the garment and use heat-resistant tape if needed to hold it in place. For standard hoodies, the most common placement for a chest print is the left chest (approximately 3–4 inches down from the collar, centered on the chest) or full front center. For designs that cross the hoodie pocket, keep in mind that the pocket seam can create an uneven surface. It's best to avoid placing designs directly over prominent seams unless you have a specialty platen.

Step 3: Cover and Press

Place a Teflon sheet or parchment paper over the transfer. This protects the transfer surface and helps distribute heat evenly across the print area.

Recommended settings for DTF transfers on hoodies and sweatshirts:

Temperature: 300–315°F (149–157°C)
Time: 15–18 seconds
Pressure: Medium-firm

Because fleece is thicker than a standard t-shirt, you may need to add 1–2 seconds to your normal press time or increase pressure slightly to ensure full adhesion through the fabric layers. Always do a test press on a similar scrap garment before committing to a full production run.

Step 4: Peel

DTF transfers from DTF Transfer Nation are designed for a warm or hot peel, meaning you can peel the film away shortly after pressing while the garment is still warm. Peel slowly and evenly from one corner, pulling the film back at a low angle — parallel to the garment surface, not upward at a sharp angle.

If any part of the transfer appears to lift with the film, lay it back down immediately and re-press for another 5–8 seconds before attempting to peel again.

Step 5: Final Press

Once you've removed the film, cover the print with your Teflon sheet and press again for 5–8 seconds. This final press helps the adhesive fully cure into the fabric fibers, significantly improving wash durability. This step is especially important on fleece, which tends to have more texture variation than flat-knit fabrics.

Common Hoodie Pressing Mistakes to Avoid

Skipping the pre-press: Moisture in the fleece will compromise adhesion. Always pre-press.

Not using a pillow insert: Without a firm backing, the platen pressure distributes unevenly, leading to patchy adhesion.

Too much pressure on the pocket seam: Pressing directly over a thick pocket seam can leave an impression mark or cause uneven adhesion. Use a platen insert or specialty pillow to level the surface.

Pressing without a cover sheet: Bare contact between the press platen and the transfer can cause scorching or uneven heat distribution. Always use a Teflon sheet or parchment paper.

Peeling too fast or at the wrong angle: A rushed or steep-angle peel is one of the most common causes of partial transfer lift. Take your time and peel at a low angle.

Design Tips for Hoodies

Keep full-front designs within a 12" x 14" print area for standard adult hoodies. For youth sizes, scale down proportionally. Avoid designs with extremely fine details on heavy fleece, as the texture can soften very small elements. Bold, high-contrast graphics and text tend to look best on fleece garments.

If you're ordering from DTF Transfer Nation, include your target garment size when building your gang sheet so we can help you size your design appropriately.

Caring for DTF-Printed Hoodies

Educating your customers on proper wash care extends the life of every print you sell. For DTF-printed hoodies, recommend turning the garment inside out before washing, washing in cold water on a gentle cycle, avoiding bleach or fabric softener, and tumble drying on low heat or air drying. These simple steps can dramatically extend the life of the print.
